What are labret studs?
Labret studs are a type of piercing jewellery that is specifically designed for piercings on the lower lip, but they can also be used in other facial piercings such as the medusa piercing, monroe piercing, and labret vertical piercings. They consist of a straight bar with a flat disc on one end that sits against the inside of the lip, and a decorative end on the other side that is visible from the outside. Labret studs come in a wide variety of materials, styles, and sizes to suit your individual preferences.
Types of labret studs
There are three main types of labret studs: externally threaded, internally threaded and threadless.
- Externally Threaded Labret Studs have threads on the inside of the post, which screw into the decorative end. This type of stud is more secure and less likely to irritate the piercing, but it can be more difficult to put in and take out. Also due to the exposed thread on the shaft it can irritate a piercing when inserting or removing from a piercing.
- Internally Threaded Labret Studs are a specific type of labret stud known for their secure design and comfort. The bar has threads on the inside, hidden from view when worn. The decorative end screws onto the bar's internal threads, creating a seamless and secure attachment. Internally threaded jewellery is now becoming one of the main types of piercing jewellery manufactured.
- Threadless Labret Studs have a flat disc on the end of the post that simply pushes into the decorative end. This type of stud is easier to put in and take out and the attachment or end is help in place by tension caused by a slight bend in the post. There are a huge selection of attachment on the market for this system ranging from basic balls to crystal and Opal set decorative pieces. Threadless can also be referred to at times as push fit or pop fit.
Materials
Labret studs can be made from a variety of materials, including:
- Surgical steel: This is the most common material for labret studs, as it is affordable, durable, and hypoallergenic.
- Titanium: This is a more expensive material than surgical steel, but it is even more durable and hypoallergenic. Titanium can also be anodised to give it a range of exciting colours.
- Gold: Gold is a beautiful and luxurious material for labret studs, but it is not as durable as surgical steel or titanium. It is also important to make sure that you choose gold that is at least 14k, as lower karat golds can irritate the piercing.
- Glass: Glass is a safe and hypoallergenic material for labret studs, but it can be fragile and break easily.
- Bioflex / Bioplast: is a popular choice for body piercings, particularly for initial piercings and sensitive individuals. They are made in a flexible plastic specifically designed for body piercings. It's made from a hypoallergenic, biocompatible acrylate polymer, similar to the material used in medical implants. Being implant-grade means it's designed to be safe and well-tolerated by the body.
- Acrylic: Acrylic is a lightweight and affordable material for labret studs, but it is not as durable as other materials and can harbour bacteria.
Use of Labret Studs
Labret studs are a versatile piece of jewellery that can be dressed up or down. They are a popular choice for everyday wear, and they can also be worn for special occasions. When choosing a labret stud, it is important to consider the size, style, and material that is right for you. It is also important to make sure that the gauge (or thickness) is correct for your size of piercing.
